The heart
of your health
AF T E R WE EK S OF I NDU LGENCE AND
holiday festivities, many people start the new
year with a fresh attitude, resolving to exercise
more, eat healthier, quit smoking and more.
While the intentions behind these resolutions
are almost always good, the manner in
which you approach change can make a huge
difference in your success.
So how can you make those changes you so
desperately desire? Start by looking inside. Get
to the heart of the matter—the reasons behind
your desire to change. For example, it is usually
not enough to
want
to work out; there must
be a heartfelt reason that benefits your life.
Perhaps working out will give you the energy
you need to get back on the golf course. Or the
strength to pick up a child. Or a lift in your mood
so you feel happier.
To make a change that sticks, once you’ve made
this connection with yourself, you must make an
emotional connection with someone else. In his
book
Change or Die: The Three Keys to Change
at Work and in Life
, Alan Deutschman writes that
the key to change is developing a relationship with
a person or group that inspires you, motivates
you and shows you the way to change. Regularly
engaging with someone who has done what you’re
aspiring to do makes you feel you can do it too.
When you feel it in your heart, you can achieve it.
At PeaceHealth Southwest, we’d like to
encourage you to take your health to heart this
year. Make a decision to improve your health—
and then make the heart connection that will
help ensure your success. We’re here to help you
every step of the way. Join a support group of
like-minded people. Read a success story online

motivate and support you as you make the health
changes you long for in your heart.
